Under ConstructionPhotographer: Joel Schnell
I’ve photographed construction projects big and small. A departure from my usual home improvement images is this bridge construction image  featuring the mall in Bloomington, MN for a local contractor. Project portfolio photographs are a specialty of mine. Up-to-date imagery of projects is useful regardless of the industry. It’s hard to put your best foot forward without professional photographs to illustrate your sales presentation, and I’m pleased to work with talented craftsmen to do so.

Shed HuntingPhotographer: Joel Schnell
This time of year can be a treasure hunt of sorts in the Minnesota Northwoods. When a whitetail deer buck annually sheds his antlers in winter, they may be discovered when the snow melts. It can be an enjoyable walk in the woods searching for them, at a time of year when it’s too early for summer activities. It is a prized find to discover a matching set of trophy antlers, and they make a popular home decor item. You have to get to them early in the year, as mice and other woodland critters like to gnaw on them. I found this nice 4-tine shed, and keep it with a ruffed grouse tail fan and some pheasant tail feathers to remember my trips afield.

Matthew Quinn, Potter
Photographer: Joel Schnell

Another addition to my craftsmen at work photography portfolio series. Matthew is a gifted ceramics artist working in North Minneapolis. His studio is a rich environment of clay, tools and pieces in various stages of completion. Each piece is wheel thrown, altered, then returned to the wheel for further decoration. I have a few of Matthew’s pieces at home, their beauty and functionality is a pleasure to behold.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade, St. Paul MN

St. Paulites love to show the green on the day to celebrate their Irish heritage. The St. Paul parade on March 16, 2013 brought out all manner of characters. Blustery temperatures in the 20’s meant bundle up for a day outside downtown.

Crashed Ice
Photographer: Joel Schnell

The Red Bull Crashed Ice series came to St. Paul, MN this month. I got a front row view at  an NBC camera jib station for the action. The temp was around 10 degrees F, so I kept a couple batteries warm in my pocket before shooting. I used an ISO of 6400 on the 5D, which excels at low light. The racers kicked up quite a bit of ice dust as they passed. It’s a sport for the fearless, in part because the athletes can’t see ahead of the next curve or below the jumps. I wanted to keep the feel of the excitement of the crowd in the photos by framing the action with the spectators. For Crashed Ice, it’s as much about the event as it is about the sport.

Dog work in the snow
Photographer: Joel Schnell
Camera: Canon 5D MKII, iphone 4s

As December comes to an end so does the ruffed grouse season. It’s a very peaceful walk in the snow for my dog and I with only the footprints of deer in the snow to mark the passage. In my work for MinnesotaNorthOutdoors.com and Ruffedgrouseminnesota.com I’ve been documenting my days afield with my bird dog Maggie, a Brittany. I include a few tips for new hunters in my stories and illustrate the great opportunities for upland hunting in Minnesota. I use my iphone for portability of camera and the 5D MKII back at the Jeep.

New Orleans
Photographer: Joel Schnell
Camera: Canon 5D MKII, iphone 4s
Editing: Adobe Lightroom 4, Photoshop CS5

For a photographer’s vacation, it’s hard to beat New Orleans, Louisiana. Friendly locals, great weather, live events, superb color, it’s hard not to find something to shoot there. The only problem is editing out what to shoot or not. In this selection you can find Chartres Street, Jackson Square, Woldenberg Park, The Cabilo, St Louis Cathedral, St Louis Cemetary #1, Frenchmen Street, and the Garden District,.

I used Lightroom to adjust highlights, color, cropping, and used some clarity and vignetting. In Photoshop i cloned out a few distracting elements on two photos. My kit of iphone and DSLR was not quite the best choice, a digital rangefinder would be the best street journalist’s option next time I go there. And I will be back.

Feed My Starving Children GalaPhotographer: Joel SchnellCamera: Canon 5D MKIIEditing: Adobe Lightroom 4, Photoshop CS5
FMSC is a unique non-profit in their mission to provide hand-packed meals to children around the world. With their specially engineered food packets all the nutrients a growing body needs is provided. In 2011, FMSC produced over 133 million meals thanks to the work of more than 565,000 volunteers.  I was pleased to help them with their photography at the annual celebration. I used two cameras, one tripod mounted and balanced for available light, the other with portable flash. I did quick exposure, color and cropping adjustments in Lightroom, including it’s remarkable ability at pulling out the detail in the shadows.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

Photographer: Joel Schnell
Camera: Canon 5D MK II, Tiffen Polarizing filter
Editing: Lightroom 4, Photoshop CS5

I took a break from a busy summer for my annual BWCA canoe trip in Northern Minnesota. Brule Lake off the Caribou Trail was my destination as last year, these pictures taken on the portage into Vernon Lake. Our group even enjoyed a whirlpool-like soak in the turbulent waters of the creek in the last photograph. For gear I packed my 5D in a water resistant Sealine bag in my Old Town Penobscot 16 canoe. I would encourage anyone experienced in camping to travel to the BWCA. It is a precious area worth traveling to, and a host of outfitters are available to provide everything you need.

I performed some image enhancement in Lightroom to increase contrast and saturation since i was shooting in the forest shade. I cranked up the iso setting on the 5D since I was using a polarizing filter and wanted to hand hold the shots.

Directing debutPhotographer: Joel SchnellCamera: iphone 4sEditing: iphoto, Photoshop CS5
Shooting a safety video for Centerpoint Energy was my directing debut Friday. Running a multicamera crew of six, it was unusual for me not to be behind the camera. Our challenges for the day included the aircraft traffic in Richfield putting a strain on the audio department, and we had a few canine actors to keep things interesting. I put in a lot of pre-production time on the storyboard, shot list and script, so everything went well. This was my first experience working above-the-line and will not be the last.
