Ruffed Grouse Hunting
Photographer: Joel Schnell

This is the time. It’s fall in Minnesota, and the hunt is on for the state’s number one game bird, ruffed grouse. Deep in the great North woods, on foot and with a dog, I travel the aspen thickets and alder swamps for birds. Many times we come up short, as they are challenging game to find, flush and harvest. Hopefully we end the day with more than just sore knees and a tired bird dog snoring on the couch, but if not that’s okay.

I have a personal project, an ezine I publish twice a month as an experiment in new journalism and social media outreach. It gives me a chance to write, and plan out a story line behind the photographs. See more of my work like this at ruffedgrouseminnesota.com

FMSC is a unique non-profit in their mission to provide hand-packed meals to children around the world. With their specially engineered food packets all the nutrients a growing body needs is provided. In 2011, FMSC produced over 133 million meals thanks to the work of more than 565,000 volunteers.  I was pleased to help them with their photography at the annual celebration. I used two cameras, one tripod mounted and balanced for available light, the other with portable flash. I did quick exposure, color and cropping adjustments in Lightroom, including it’s remarkable ability at pulling out the detail in the shadows.

Taking a Frisbee for a spin
Photographer: Joel Schnell

I haven’t had a new Frisbee since I was a teenager, and April in the Midwest is Frisbee weather. I picked up a Pro Classic 130g Frisbee, and a Frisbee Classic to keep in the trunk of the car on the ready. I’m a bit rusty but it’s all coming back now— finger spins, left-and-right hand catches, boomerang flights, and the perfect hover float before it falls right into the receiver’s hand. The simple pleasure of the smell of fresh green grass, the trees in bloom, the barbecue grill heating up, and a quick toss of the disc before the coals are ready.
